Monet Water Lilies
Here's a cross stitch of one of the paintings from Monet's Water Lillies series. It's a large pattern, would take quite a while to stitch and makes use of 45 different thread patterns, but other than that I think it came out pretty nice looking.

The Pink Cloud, Antibes by Paul Signac

Ok, this is the last pointillism piece I'll do for a little while. The piece is The Pink Cloud, Antibes by Paul Signac (1916). In the original work, the ship and edges of the water are green, but I actually like the black appearance that emerged. Note: I used the "enhance image" option in the advanced options. This had the effect of darkening the boats and edge of the water, and so they came out looking black.

This demonstrates some of the differences (ok, problems) that can be introduced by the advanced options, but since the site is completely free, you can test different options to see what works best! If you wanted to stitch this, you may want to substitute greener colors for the grays and blacks in the pattern. Which brings up the second reminder point: we do our best with matching floss colors, but depending on the light some flosses look significantly different, so always double check that the colors we suggest look reasonable, and feel free to substitute other flosses as necessary.

Paul Signac Breakfast
I really like the idea of pointillism, and how it matches up with cross stitching, so I'm going to continue with a few more cross stitch patterns of famous pieces of pointillism. This one is Paul Signac's Breakfast (1886-1887)
Stitching this with a relatively small floss count on white aida, so that the background shows through the stitches, may produce a pointillism-like effect. If you try it, let us know how it turns out!

Seurat-La Parade
I thought it would be interesting to make a chart for some pointillism paintings. This is the famous piece "La Parade" by Georges Seurat (1889).

Starry Night
To start out, here is an example of a more complex pattern, which is easy to make using myphotostitch.com : Starry Night, by Vincent van Gogh. It is one of my favorite images from the gallery. The motion implied in the image is captured nicely in the stitches, I think.
